About Us

Liverpool Drum Studios is based within Elevator Studios in the fashionable Baltic Triangle area of the city. The lessons are taught by experienced session drummer Roy Martin. The studio boasts a partnership with Paiste cymbals and Mapex Drums and the lessons are conducted on two kits within the spacious studio.

After playing in local bands in Liverpool since his teen years, in the mid 80’s Roy moved to New York and whilst forging a freelance career there doing his first recording sessions and tours, he also studied at The Drummers Collective under the tutelage of world renowned drum educator, the late Kim Plainfield.

On his return to England after nearly 5 years, he had gained valuable experience recording and touring with such names as soul legend Aretha Franklin and platinum selling indie/post punk legends Modern English.

Since then Roy has recorded and toured throughout the world with an eclectic group of artists such as James Morrison, guitar legend Snowy White of Pink Floyd, French superstar Patricia Kaas, even Ant and Dec in their days as pop stars.

Roy has also appeared on numerous TV, film and advertising soundtracks. He has been imparting this knowledge to students privately for the last 26 years. You can read more about Roy here

His lessons will cover Technique, Timing, Independence Studies, Grades, reading notation, Song playing and can cover most styles and levels.

Beginners are very welcome.

Testimonials

Roy is my drumming mentor!

“I first came to Roy as a 19 year old ‘wannabe’ professional musician. His reputation as one of the best led me to wonder “How do I do that?” The lessons were fun and his attitude and advice on all things drums and the music industry were invaluable to me as I started my career in the music business, and still are today! I consider Roy my drumming mentor and continue to seek his advice 23 years later.”

Roy is a truly fantastic and fun teacher!

“Roy is a truly fantastic and fun teacher, and most importantly a top guy to boot. As a young lad he taught me how play with restraint and with dynamics, he made me understand that in order to become good at drums I had to learn rudiments and learn to sight read. He taught me how to groove! Unleashing Gadd and Porcaro beats on me from a young age, Roy taught me how to practice effectively and gave me confidence when I didn’t get it right first time”

Tuition from Roy is highly recommended whatever your current skill level!

“I’ve been a student of Roy’s for several years now – I was originally self-taught for some years beforehand but I had hit a plateau in my development, and my playing generally lacked variety and that certain sense of a performance being “polished” that only comes from professional tuition. Thanks to Roy I have developed my understanding of and ability to play a wider range of styles, an ability read formal drum music notation and also an appreciation for some of the more subtle nuances of playing the drums in a more accomplished fashion. Tuition from Roy is highly recommended whatever your current skill level!”

Roy’s teaching has always remained highly influential!

“Roy’s teaching has always remained a highly influential part of my drum kit world. I started lessons with him when I was 13. He was very encouraging, enthusiastic, patient and supportive of my progress. I always looked forward to my lessons after school; they were enjoyable and relaxed and I came away having learnt new skills each week. It was there that I learnt technique, strength, rudiments, latin, jazz, pop, rock and funk rhythms, fills and notation which have all been vital to my career ever since, (I still refer to the lessons I’ve kept in my books!) He had a genuine and friendly approach to teaching and a really positive attitude which has remains a huge part in my love for playing drums.”
